For the permanent replacement of missing teeth, implants are a solution that provides a permanent fixing point for a crown, bridge or denture. Once fitted, these will be indistinguishable from a real tooth in terms of cosmetic appearance and day-to-day maintenance.
Not even those closest to you will be able to tell the difference between the real and the not-so-real!
There are many advantages to an implant; including, aesthetics, hygiene, function and reduction in bone loss, which all make the procedure well worth consideration. Dr. Meskhi will be happy to fully discuss all areas of the procedure to you.
The implant is basically a stand-in for the root portion of your tooth and comprises of a titanium ‘peg’ that is placed into a drilled socket before being anchored into the jawbone by a process known as ‘osseointegration’. This is simply the fusing of bone with the implant during it’s regrowth and titanium is chosen because of its strength and the fact that it is well tolerated by the body.
Indeed, the placement of an implant can actually encourage bone growth and prevent the sagging of skin, which can sometimes be the result of atrophying of the bone around any voids.
Implants can only be placed in areas where the bone is suitably dense and the volume of it is receptive to the procedure. In order to determine this, an X-ray and CT scan (Computer Topography) will be carried as part of a full oral examination by Dr. Meskhi.
Once the suitability of the bone and the areas surrounding the missing tooth has been confirmed, Dr. Meskhi will proceed with the painless and accurate placement of the implant under local anesthetic. This will be followed where (rarely) necessary with bone grafting.
The procedure itself is carried out over a series of visits and the implant will of course be a snug fit to speed up the osseointegration process and once it is in place it will require a period of between six weeks and six months before the implant is osseointegrated and ready to accept the crown or other fixture. In some cases a temporary bridge or crown may be provided during this period.
Do not let the loss of a tooth deny you the cosmetic and physical benefits of a full set of ‘pearly whites’. Simply make an appointment with Dr. Meskhi to discuss the treatment in a relaxed and friendly environment.
